What was your major or field of study in college? Did you wind up working in that field or using that degree? If not, what field have you wound up in?
Submitted by sneuf.

I never went to college until after i study my field was in the field working and decided to work on a degree. The degree i am working on is Studio Art. I am attending The University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the field i work in is Addiction Treatment or sometimes referred to as Substance Abuse Treatment. I am currently a research counselor for The Center for Addiction Research at The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. I began working as a counselor in 1979 in Houston Texas. Interesting to me is the fact i was accepted at The University of North Texas State in 1977 to attend but at the ripe old age of 17 I felt i was too young and put off going. At the time the military recruiters wanted many of us to join.

In 1977 Vietnam still seemed to real and even waiting until i was 18 to join seemed too young so i put off joining the military. Before i knew it i was a drug and alcohol counselor working with young drug abusers and their families. Back then no one cared about the drug problem, it was not until Carol Burnett and Nancy Regan did the USA realize the extent of the drug problem. To paraphrase Richard Pyor (comedian) Now that the drug problem has reached the white communities its called an Epidemic. There i was a young 19 year old working for a nonprofit program out of the back rooms of church's raising money through bake sales and spaghetti dinners. And boom an explosion of attention, treatment centers opened, books published, talk shows, the drug problem became center stage. I buzzy dealing with the issues of broken families, drug addict teenagers, broken hearted parents. My friends i were like Jedi Knights, unsung hero's it was a fascinating time. There only a hand full of us left from back then i am truly grateful for the choices and opportunities of those days.

On a photography note, my daughter whom is in her twenties began subscribing to the Rolling Stones Magazine a magazine that i felt was responsible for glamorizing the whole drug scene and i boycotted. In my photography classes i began to hear about Annie Leibovitz and her work behind the scenes with rock stars andas a major contributor to the magazines early successes. Now her i was studying her work ironic. Enough said for now.
